Why the 15000 km Oil Change Rule Does Not Work in Korea

Today I want to talk about something
every car owner wonders about engine oil.

Various Engine oil
Various Engine oil

1️⃣ What Engine Oil Viscosity Means

When the number is lower
the oil is thinner and flows faster.
When the number is higher
the oil is thicker and provides
stronger protection but flows slower.

For example 5W30
The 5W refers to winter performance
 at low temperatures
The 30 refers to viscosity retention
 at high temperature

2️⃣ Choosing the Right Oil for Korean Roads

Korea has four distinct seasons with
a mix of heavy city traffic and highway driving.
Choosing the right viscosity depends
more on driving environment than on the car itself.

  • General use 5W30
  • City driving 0W20 to 5W30
  • Frequent highway driving 5W30 to 5W40
  • Cold winter 0W20 to 0W30

I drive a MINI Clubman S.
The manual recommends
an oil change every 15000 km.
But I personally change it every 5000 km
for better protection and smoother performance.

3️⃣ Why the 15000 km Interval is Too Long

Most imported car manuals
suggest a 15000 km oil change interval.
However this standard is based on
European and North American driving conditions.
Those environments offer long highway driving
stable engine temperatures and fewer stop and go situations.

In Korea driving conditions are very different.
Short trips frequent stops
and severe traffic jams are common.
Engines often run for long idling times
and experience extreme temperatures
 both in summer and winter.
Under these conditions engine oil
 degrades much faster.

By the time you reach 15000 km the oil
may already have lost its protective function.

4️⃣ Recommended Oil Change Interval in Korea

Changing oil every 5000 to 7000 km or
once a year is more realistic for Korean roads.

If most of your driving is short distance or
city based around 5000 km is the safest interval.

The manual should be a reference not a rule.
Adjust the schedule according to real driving conditions.

5️⃣ Tips for Proper Oil Maintenance

During the first 3000 to 5000 km change the oil
at a local shop without resetting the service indicator.
This helps remove early metal particles
and impurities after break in.

At 15000 km visit the official service center
for a warranty covered change and reset.

After that continue changing oil
at a trusted shop every 5000 km.
This approach keeps your engine healthy
maintains warranty coverage and saves cost.

Conclusion

Engine oil is not just a consumable part
but a shield that protects your engine.
Choose viscosity based on your driving style
 and seasonal conditions.
Set your change interval shorter
to match Korean driving environments.
Following these two principles keeps your engine
smooth, strong and reliable for years to come.
